Let's discuss the 1968 Porsche 912...
When Porsche birthed the 356, the sports car market changed forever. While many sports cars of the time were front engine, the 356 had its peppy 4-cylinder placed in the back end of the car. The engine placement matched with the extreme light curb-weight and compact chassis length meant for remarkable handling. It’s cornering abilities made up for the relatively soft power output. From the 1950’s through the mid-1960’s, the 356 turned into an epic sports car with an international racing pedigree to back it up. After nearly 2 decades of this successful model, Porsche needed to step it up a notch.
The bar was raised in 1963 at the Frankfurt Auto Show as the German manufacture unveiled their all-new masterpiece, the 911 (originally called the 901). Powered by a 130-horsepower flat-6 and wrapped in stunning bodywork, this new car set the precedent for the brand and has remained the benchmark car to this day. With the new technology, larger engine, and groundbreaking design, the price of the car also followed an upward path. Realizing the price jump and understanding there was still a sizable market for the 4-cylinder powerplant, Porsche also introduced an “entry level model” of the 911 at a similar price to the outgoing 356.
Enter the Porsche 912, the 4-cylinder variant of the striking 911. This car hit a soft spot for many, as it used nearly the same 1.6-liter engine from the sturdy and reliable 356 S/C, the car it was replacing. Putting this drivetrain on a new state-of-the-art chassis and underneath fantastic bodywork resulted in a sales success. The 912 initially outsold its more powerful big brother, but after the market realized the 911’s capabilities, the script flipped. Between 1965 and 1969, over 32,000 912’s were made, a testament to the then small company. The 912 was built as a sales booster for the 911 until the concept was proven, making the 102-horsepower sports car an integral part of Porsche’s success and growth.
This particular 912 has been owned by the same gentleman since 1978 and has been thoroughly enjoyed, taking the Porsche to PCA club events, Rally's, and weekend drives.
