This is one of two vintage hand painted OX BONE (the e-bay police will not permit ox bone in the title but do permit it in the listing, oxen are NOT endangered, this is ridiculous) lipstick holders. They both have various detailed scenes on four sides and the lid. I have seen bracelets with similarly painted panels offered as 1920s to 1940s. These boxes open on simple pin hinges to reveal a velvet lined bottom.
THIS one is the larger of the two, 2 5/8" by 1 5/16" on the base. It appears to tell a story in the 5 different panels. There are two princes on horseback. They carry an umbrella of sorts. The paintings are all very nice. There is some loss to the gold trim.
It is suggested these depict Persian horse riders of the Mughul Empire (1526-1857). WOW!
